@Alix M i spoke to salesman who checked it in. He stated that when you are looking at the furniture sitting next to each other you cannot tell they are not "connected" "attached" to each other. We did look at another unit that we just received in it to was "unattached" you could not tell it was unattached until you go to move it. Which is what happened in this case, it was not noticed until it was in to be prepped and the mechanisms were being tested. As it sat it looked as though the seat was normal.
